Tom Costello is an NBC News Correspondent based in Washington, DC, reporting daily for the “TODAY,” “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” MSNBC and CNBC.
His broad portfolio of beats includes aviation and transportation, space, cybersecurity and economics.
Among his major assignments: The U.S. trade wars with China, Europe, Canada and Mexico; the engine explosion on board a Southwest Airlines flight that fatally injured a passenger; NASA’s unmanned science mission to the sun; the private sector’s Race to Space; terror attacks in the Brussels and Istanbul airports; the search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370; the shootdown of MH 17 over Ukraine; the Miracle on the Hudson emergency landing in New York; airlines crashes involving Asiana, Air France, ColganAir, ComAir, Mexicana, American and United Airlines.
In 2017 Costello was the first network correspondent on the scene as members of congress came under gunfire at a baseball field in Virginia.  That same year his coverage of deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA earned NBC News an Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Costello joined NBC News in 2004 as a New York based correspondent and in 2005 moved to Washington, DC at the request of then bureau Chief Tim Russert.

Prior to joining NBC News, Costello was the senior correspondent at CNBC Business News in New York from 1999-2004 and was on duty as CNBC’s Nasdaq Editor in Manhattan on 9/11.
From 1996-1999 he covered international business, reporting from Brussels and London for CNBC.
He has been recognized with national and regional Emmy awards, Edward R Murrow reporting honors, National Headliner awards, Society of Professional Journalists, DuPont/Columbia University, the NABJ, Associated Press, Gannett and the RTDNA.
In 2018 Costello earned a certificate in Cybersecurity Risk Management from HarvardX.  He also holds a master's degree in International Commerce from Boston University (Brussels Graduate Center) and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado/Boulder.
He is originally from the Denver area but now lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Astrid Boon of Brussels, Belgium.  They have two college-aged daughters.
