Civic engagement events held in partnership with Telemundo Network, Telemundo owned stations and NALEO Educational Fund will help eligible individuals start their U.S. citizenship journey and register to vote in advance of Election 2020
MIAMI, FL – (September 16, 2019) – The Telemundo Network, part of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and Telemundo Station Group (Telemundo owned stations), two divisions of NBCUniversal, are teaming up with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund to host two daylong events dedicated to answering questions from the public about issues related to U.S. citizenship and voter registration.
Under the umbrella of Telemundo’s civic engagement campaign, “Hazte Contar” or “Be Counted” in English, and powered by NALEO Educational Fund, the Telemundo/NALEO Educational Fund citizenship day phone bank will take place on Tuesday, September 17 from 7:00 a.m. ET to 9:30 p.m. ET with the Telemundo/NALEO Educational Fund voter registration phone bank set for a week later on Tuesday, September 24, at the same time.
Individuals can call NALEO Educational Fund’s toll-free hotline 1-888-839-8682 (888-VE-Y-VOTA) to speak with live bilingual operators who can answer questions about both of these topics and direct individuals to pro-bono or low cost naturalization legal services and voter registration assistance in their areas. NALEO Educational Fund’s toll-free hotline is also operated year-round Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. ET to 8:00 p.m. ET.
Leading up to the September 17 and September 24 phone banks, Telemundo owned stations in 30 markets will air news stories aimed at educating audiences about the U.S. citizenship application process. The Telemundo stations will also deliver on-air news pieces that will raise awareness about the importance of registering to vote. In addition, Telemundo Network will amplify both phonebanks on its morning show “Un Nuevo Día,” its news programs “Noticias Telemundo Mediodia,” “Al Rojo Vivo,” and “Noticias Telemundo”, and across all its digital and social platforms.

America is home to nearly 8.6 million legal permanent residents (LPRs) that meet the eligibility requirements to apply for U.S. citizenship. Of those, a majority or 4.4 million of all LPRs eligible to naturalize are Latino. If they complete the naturalization process, these aspiring New Americans are poised to play a critical role in our nation’s political process as new voters. It is expected that more than 32 million Latinos will be eligible to vote in next year’s presidential election, resulting in Latinos becoming the second-largest racial or ethnic group to be eligible to vote in a presidential election, for the first time.
The Telemundo stations will follow-up their September 2019 informational events with localized voter registration events, multiplatform coverage of local to federal-level electoral campaigns and unveiling of key polling information in the months to come, ahead of the 2020 elections.
