Moderated by Noticias Telemundo Senior Correspondent Vanessa Hauc at the headquarters of the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation at the Vatican, this unprecedented forum established a direct line of communication between the Pope and young Latinos in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States, Argentina and Paraguay, as well as a group of women detainees in the Mexican state of Morelos.
In “El papa con los latinos,” the Pope connected directly with children at the “Niños Héroes” Shelter in the municipality of Jojutla, Morelos, an area hard hit by the recent earthquake in Mexico. Also in Morelos, a group of female prisoners at Social Readaptation Center Number 13 sent a message to the Pontiff and listened live to his response. In Puerto Rico, young victims of Hurricane Maria posed their questions to the Pope, while at the Telemundo studios in Houston, Texas, youths affected by Hurricane Harvey had the opportunity to tell him about their experiences.
“El papa con los latinos” is part of a series of Noticias Telemundo specials presented under the banner “Las cosas como son” (Telling It Like It Is), designed to empower US Latinos by providing them with objective and relevant information about issues that have an actual impact on their lives.
In June 2016, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises signed an agreement with Scholas Occurrentes, Pope Francis’s global foundation to educate, inspire and connect young people around the world through technology, the arts and sports. As a result of the agreement, the network broadcast the second “Unidos por la paz” (United for Peace) soccer game, featuring such legendary players as Diego Armando Maradona, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Rafa Márquez, Hernán Crespo, Ronaldinho, Cafú, and former Mexican striker and Telemundo Deportes commentator Carlos Hermosillo, in October 2016.
