In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, Exploring Space takes you onboard the USS Hornet, now docked here in Alameda. In 1969, the Hornet was assigned to recover the three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. The documentary tells the story from the perspective of the sailors that took part in Apollo 11's splashdown, including the rigorous training they underwent and how the crew was forced to change course hours before the splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
“Exploring Space gives an eye-opening look at the Bay Area’s role in the Apollo 11 mission with enlightening stories from Bay Area people who took part in this amazing feat that unified people around the world,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area. “The Bay Area has always been a leader in pushing the unknown, with the contributions of NASA Ames research center a key starting point.”
Before Apollo, before Silicon Valley, there was NASA Ames. For 75 years, Ames has led NASA and the country in conducting world-class research and development. Exploring Space takes viewers inside Nasa Ames research center through the stories of one of its oldest employees, 94-year-old Jack Boyd and NASA Ames Center Director Eugene Tu.
Former NASA astronauts Steve Smith, Tammy Jernigan and Jeff Wisoff also share untold stories of their missions. From spacewalking to sleeping in low gravity and all of the challenges of living in space, the astronauts share their most memorable moments. The documentary also features SETI co-founder Jill Tarter, SETI scientist Nathalie Cabrol and historian Bob Fish.
