WeatheRate, an independent weather research company, today announced it has certified eight out of 11 NBC owned stations in the U.S. as the “Most Accurate” local weather forecasters in their respective markets, while three stations ranked as the second most accurate stations in their markets. The stations that received the “Most Accurate” forecasting certification for 2018 include: WNBC in New York, KNBC in Los Angeles, WMAQ in Chicago, WCAU in Philadelphia, KNTV in San Francisco-Bay Area, KXAS in Dallas/Fort Worth, WTVJ in South Florida, and WVIT in Hartford, CT.
“WeatheRate’s independent research shows what our viewers already know and rely on: our local weather teams leverage their experience, insight, and cutting-edge technology to provide the best, most accurate forecasts in these markets, covering almost a quarter of the United States population,” said Nate Johnson, Director of Weather Operations, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. "I’m proud of the work our teams do every day to serve their communities with accurate forecasts that go beyond the numbers to how the weather affects viewers’ lives.”
Fueled by NBCUniversal’s investment, the NBC and Telemundo stations are changing the way that weather forecasts and current weather conditions are presented to all audiences with award-winning, state-of-the-art weather technology. NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal that includes 42 NBC/Telemundo stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, owns the largest privately owned network of cutting edge fixed and mobile weather radars in the country.
“NBCUniversal Owned TV Station’s recent investments in weather and their concerted effort to provide viewers with accurate forecasts are clear. They have earned our seal of approval in more top 20 markets than any other broadcast group in the country,” added Bruce Fixman, President, WeatheRate.
Using a business model similar to J.D. Power and Associates, WeatheRate conducts independent research for a 52-week period, and reviews stations’ forecasts of local conditions including high and low temperatures, timing and amount of precipitation, strong wind and dense fog, as well as severe weather events including thunderstorms. At the end of each WeatheRating review period, WeatheRate offers its seal of approval only to the most accurate TV station in each market. Later this year, WeatheRate will certify the “most accurate” local Spanish-language TV weather forecasters, for the first time.
Based in Phoenix, Arizona, WeatheRate was developed by meteorologist Bruce Fixman in an effort to provide viewers with reliable and unbiased information about where to turn to receive the most accurate weather forecasts. WeatheRate has been verifying the accuracy of television stations’ weather forecasts since 2003. The company conducts and funds their own independent research.
