SAN JOSE, CA -- (April 24, 2019) – Recognizing the best in broadcast and electronic journalism across the country, the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awarded NBC BAY AREA four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for journalistic excellence.

These prestigious honors were awarded to NBC Bay Area for:

  • Excellence in Innovation: Recognizing NBC Bay Area for its investigation into the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard exposing allegations that contractors hired by the Navy to clean up radiation at the shipyard had falsified data. The station broke the story more than four years ago and catalyzed coverage by both local and national outlets as more details of the fraud at Hunters Point came to light. In this most recent iteration of NBC Bay Area’s Hunters Point coverage—a television story and corresponding digital experience—the station shed new light on this ongoing saga and also designed a comprehensive online presentation of the Hunters Point story. The investigation and interactive map can be accessed on by clicking here.
  • Excellence in Social Media: Recognizing NBC Bay Area for keeping its viewers informed across a variety of social media platforms during several breaking news events in 2018 including the shooting at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, Ca. on April 3, 2018, and the destructive wildfires in Paradise, Ca. in November of 2018. The station was also recognized for its vertical video storytelling on IGTV and use of animations and visualization on social media.
  • Multimedia Website: Recognizing NBC Bay Area for its commitment to delivering breaking news to the communities it serves in a timely and accurate fashion through its website, apps, push alerts and social media platforms. In 2018 the station launched a new digital innovation team comprised of journalists who are focused on experimenting with new ways of telling stories utilizing different digital formats.
  • News Documentary: Recognizing NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit’s special report “Transgender Kids: A Changing Student Body.” Led by Investigative Reporter Bigan Shaban, the two-year investigation revealed a serious lack of training for educators on issues related to transgender children. The reporting led to a major reform effort that resulted in new policies at 61 schools impacting nearly 60,000 students. The special report can be accessed on by clicking here.

“At NBC Bay Area, we are constantly striving to tell stories that make an impact, and to provide unique ways to engage with our reporting, whether on TV, digital or social platforms,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager for NBC Bay Area. “We are honored to have been recognized for the new and innovative ways that our teams are telling stories, providing our audience with content that is important to them, on a variety of platforms.”
