FORT WORTH / DALLAS, TX – (June 10, 2019) – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth / KXAS and Telemundo 39 / KXTX announces today the June 18 kick-off of Reading With You/Leyendo Contigo, created to encourage kids to read at least one book a week throughout the summer to help combat summer learning loss, often referred to as the “summer slide.” NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 will team up with Reading Partners North Texas, a volunteer-driven early literacy tutoring program primarily serving students in under resourced schools, to offer weekly book recommendations, reading sessions, book giveaways and more, in both English and Spanish, to support the retention of valuable reading skills.
“We launched Reading With You/Leyendo Contigo because we know how important reading is in a child’s education,” said Tom Ehlmann, NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 President and General Manager. “We take tremendous pride in being a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth community and are excited to provide information and resources to connect parents and students to learning opportunities.”
NBC 5’s morning anchor and reporter, Laura Harris and education reporter, Wayne Carter, along with Telemundo 39’s anchor and reporter, Andrea Aguirre, and consumer investigative reporter, Martha Minjarez, will feature a weekly on-air segment with local stories during this nine-week campaign. Throughout the series, the team will visit local reading programs, libraries and community organizations to bring interactive reading sessions to kids. Reading With You/Leyendo Contigo will focus on elementary-aged students in grades K-5.
NBC 5, Telemundo 39 and Reading Partners North Texas are working hard to mitigate summer slide for students this summer break. The goal is to cultivate better reading habits, promote extracurricular education and provide continuous inspiration to read more.
