The International Superstar will also Perform Live Thursday, October 25 on Telemundo
Hollywood, CA (October 4, 2018) - Telemundo announced today that Daddy Yankee, who is up for six awards this year, will be the recipient of the special Icon Award at the upcoming “Latin American Music Awards” (Latin AMAs). The Latin AMA Icon Award is given to the most distinguished and beloved artist of the Hispanic world, who is recognized on every continent as the King or Queen of its music genre. The recipient of the Latin AMA Icon Award interprets our life in his songs, forms an important part of Latin America’s history and is considered a musical hero. His name exceeds all generations; his audience admires him and other artists are inspired daily by his brilliance. Daddy Yankee will also be performing at the Latin AMAs, which will broadcast live from the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, on Thursday October 25, 2018 at 8pm/7c, preceded by the one-hour carpet pre-show “La Alfombra de Latin AMAs” at 7pm/6c. The show will also air simultaneously on Spanish-language entertainment cable network, Universo.
Daddy Yankee will come to the Latin AMAs at the heels of his hugely successful world tour that recently took him to Shanghai, where fans welcomed him dancing to the tune of “Dura.” The Puerto Rican artist, who recently collaborated with Janet Jackson in her latest comeback “Made For Now,” triumphed in the world of reggaeton, but it was his album Barrio Fino with his international hit “Gasolina” that propelled him into international stardom, introducing audiences worldwide to the rhythm of this new genre. Barrio Fino debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart and ruled for 24 nonconsecutive weeks, and since then the artist has had 10 additional titles on the chart.
Daddy Yankee boasts 61 charted hits on Hot Latin songs, five of which went No. 1, including “Rompe” which ruled for 15 nonconsecutive weeks in 2005, and “Limbo,” which crowned the chart in 2013 and reigned for 15 consecutive weeks. Yankee’s collaboration in Luis Fonsi’s smash “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, peaked at No. 1 on the chart in February, 2017 and ruled the tally for an impressive 56 weeks. The official video for "Despacito" on YouTube received over a billion views, becoming the most-watched music video in YouTube’s history. Its success led Daddy Yankee to become the most listened artist worldwide on Spotify, the first Latin artist to accomplish such a feat.
The three-hour live telecast presentation of the 2018 Latin AMA’s will feature performances by artists that are relevant to Latinos, regardless of language. Renowned rapper and actor Ludacris, regional Mexican singer and songwriter Christian Nodal, international rapper Pitbull, popular boy band CNCO, bachata singer and songwriter Prince Royce, singer, songwriter and actress Becky G, Colombian multi-genre singer and social media powerhouse Maluma, regional Mexican band from Sinaloa, Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga, pop singer Leslie Grace, multi-platinum rapper Flo Rida, Argentinian singer Tini, and Spanish pop singer Alvaro Soler compose the initial line-up of stars to perform at this year’s event.
Top nominees this year include J Balvin (9), Ozuna (9), Nicky Jam (8), Daddy Yankee (6), Bad Bunny (5), Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga (5), Christian Nodal (5), Luis Fonsi (4), Maluma (4), Romeo Santos (4), Shakira (4) and Wisin (4). Produced by Telemundo and Somos Productions, the fourth annual Latin AMAs pays tribute to today’s most influential and iconic Latin artists, as voted by the fans in the tradition of the “American Music Awards,” the world’s largest fan-voted award show. To select winners, fans from the United States and Puerto Rico can vote until 3pm ET/12pm PT on October 10 online at www.LatinAMAs.com/vota, and fans worldwide can vote via Twitter.
