STAMFORD, Conn. – June 8, 2020 – Beginning tonight at 8 p.m. ET, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA presents the world’s best beach volleyball players during this week’s primetime 2019 World Championships Week – Beach Volleyball. This week’s competitions continue the network’s 2019 World Championships Week coverage, which spans a multitude of Olympic and Paralympic sports over the next several weeks.

From tonight through Sunday, June 14 (starting at 8 p.m.), 2019 World Championships Week – Beach Volleyball features more than 30 hours of programming from the 2019 World Beach Volleyball Championships from Hamburg, Germany. The 2019 World Championships was the biggest event in beach volleyball last year, with Olympic quota spots on the line for the winning teams.

Athletes competing in Hamburg included three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and her partner, 2016 Olympian Brooke Sweat, as well as two-time Olympic medalist April Ross and her partner Alix Klineman. The men’s competition included 2008 Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and his partner, Nick Lucena.

The Canadian women and Russian men finished the 2019 World Beach Volleyball Championships atop the medal podium. Rounding out the women’s competition Team USA’s Klineman/Ross finished second while Australia took third place. Second and third place in the men’s competition belonged to Germany and Norway.

NBC Sports host Kathryn Tappen will introduce coverage each day throughout this week’s diving competitions. Chris Marlowe, along with Olympian Kevin Wong, called the event.

TONIGHT: MONDAY, JUNE 8 – 2019 FIVB WORLD BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 1-2

Highlighting Team USA’s performance on during the first day of Pool Play at the World Championships were Keri Walsh Jennings, the sport’s most decorated Olympian, and fellow Rio Olympian Brooke Sweat in their first world championships as a team.

The second day of pool play will feature the teams of Kim Berens and Cinja Tillman from Germany facing off against Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre, and Megan and Nicole McNamara from Canada facing off against the German team of Sandra Ittlinger and Chantal Laboureur.

Team USA’s April Ross and Alix Klineman beat out the team of Xue Chen and Wang Xinxin from China and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena faced off against the Canadian team of Ben Saxton and Grant O’Gorman.

Klineman and Ross are back on day 4 of Pool Play beating out Germany to advance in the tournament while Brooke Sweat and Kerri Walsh Jennings battled against Australia’s Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy.

The single-elimination phase of the FIVB Beach World Championships was highlighted by outstanding performances by Sara Hughes and Summer Ross advancing to the Round of 16.

On the men’s side in pool play, Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena faced Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen from the Netherlands.

Six teams from the United States advanced to the next round of play during the women’s round of 16 and men’s round of 32.

All four U.S. men’s teams competing in Hamburg advanced to the Round of 16, highlighted by Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, and Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb.

The women’s quarterfinals were highlighted by Rio Olympic silver medalist Barbara Seixas and her partner Fernanda Alves from Brazil taking on the Swiss team of Nina Betschart and Tanja Huberli.

Team USA’s Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb take on the talented team of Vyacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovsky from Russia in the Men’s Round of 16.

SATURDAY, JUNE 13 – 2019 FIVB WORLD BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 8-9

Team USA’s Alix Klineman and April Ross secured a spot in the gold medal match with a victory over Australia’s Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy. With the win, Ross made her third trip to the finals at the world championships.

The men’s team of Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb fell to Vycheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovsky from Russia in the semifinals, setting them up for the bronze medal match against the Norwegian team.

April Ross and Alix Klineman lost to their Canadian opponents but earned the silver medal on the ninth day of play at the FIVB World Beach Volleyball Championships. The silver medal is Ross’s third medal at Worlds. She won gold in 2009 with Jen Kessy and silver in 2017 with Lauren Fendrick.

Team USA’s men’s play ended with Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb losing in the bronze medal match to Norway’s top-seeded Anders Mol and Christian Sørum. German team Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler played for gold in front of a home crowd after an unexpected run to the final.
