The Mindy Project

Tuesdays on FOX (9:30-10 p.m. ET); Series Premiere: September 25
“The Mindy Project” is a biting single-camera comedy from Emmy Award-nominated writer/producer and New York Times best-selling author Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) that follows a woman who, despite having a successful career, is unlucky in love. So, to get her personal life back on track, this hopeless romantic vows to make some drastic changes.

Funny, impatient and politically incorrect, Mindy Lahiri (Kaling) is a skilled OB/GYN with a hectic personal life, who struggles to find the right guy, the right outfit and the right attitude.  Mindy shares a practice with two doctors, neither of whom makes life any easier for her. Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) is a hothead and guys’ guy who criticizes her for everything, including her struggling love life and her lack of professionalism – even though it’s obvious to everyone except Mindy that he secretly admires her work. In contrast, Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks) is the walking definition of bad news, and everything comes easy to this suave skinny jean-wearing Brit.

Rounding out the medical staff is receptionist Betsy Putch (Zoe Jarman), young, earnest and easily excitable, who thinks the world of Mindy and is always trying to impress her; and male nurse Morgan Tookers (Ike Barinholtz), a reformed ex-con and the hospital’s resident cheerleader, who just wishes that he and his colleagues spent more time together outside of work. Mindy also is in constant contact with her sometimes too-blunt best friend from college, Gwen Schur (Anna Camp), a lawyer-turned-Pilates mom who is always trying to dole out advice.

Always the optimist, Mindy hopes the new year will allow her to put the previous year’s mistakes behind her, including the slightly-less-than-graceful way she handled her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, her many disputes with Gwen and the demise of her relationship with a lying, cheating sports attorney.  Even if the universe is trying to turn her into a forever-single “cat lady” of sorts, Mindy is determined to get into shape, find a new look and snag a great guy. As the season continues, Mindy attempts to have a one-night stand with Brendan (guest star Mark Duplass), the midwife from the neighboring office, but things don’t pan out as planned. She also tries to rekindle an old romance with Sam (guest star Seth Rogen), her “first kiss” from Jewish summer camp. Meanwhile, Danny meets a younger woman (guest star Allison Williams), and Mindy’s brother, Rishi (guest star Utkarsh Ambudkar), pays a visit from college.

“The Mindy Project” is produced by 3 Arts Entertainment in association with Universal Television. The series is created and written by Mindy Kaling. Kaling, Howard Klein (“The Office,” “Parks and Recreation”), Matt Warburton (“The Simpsons”), Michael Spiller (“Modern Family”) and Jack Burditt (“30 Rock”) are executive producers. “Like” “The Mindy Project” on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheMindyProject.
