MIAMI – June 19, 2012 –Telemundo Media, “the Home of the Olympics in Spanish in the United States,” unveiled its plans for London 2012, outlining the most extensive Spanish-language Olympic coverage ever from July 25th through August 12th. Telemundo’s Olympic coverage will exceed 173 hours across multiple platforms including its national broadcast network, its digital and social media properties such as www.olimpiadastelemundo.com and www.deportestelemundo.com. Coverage will be live from both, London and the network’s studios based in Miami, with an impressive roster of more than 20 on-air presenters, commentators, hosts and reporters including internationally acclaimed sportscaster Andrés Cantor, Emmy® Award winner Jessi Losada, soccer guru Sammy Sadovnik, former Olympic athletes Manuel Sol and Erik Morales and Telemundo celebrities and reporters. Telemundo is putting together its largest-ever digital platform with an aggressive social media campaign and the first-ever online and mobile live-streaming of Olympic content in Spanish-language to provide a fully customized London 2012 experience for U.S. Hispanic users.
“Telemundo will redefine the Olympic Games experience for U.S. Hispanics,” said Jorge Hidalgo, Executive Vice President of Sports for Telemundo Media and Executive Producer of Telemundo’s coverage. “Whether it is watching our live competitions, feeling inspired by the performance of a Hispanic athlete or just enjoying the ambiance of the Games, our viewers will experience London 2012 in unprecedented ways.”
Internationally acclaimed sportscaster Andrés Cantor returns as the main host for Telemundo’s coverage of the Olympic Games. London 2012 marks Cantor’s 3rd Olympic broadcast assignment with Telemundo (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008). Jessi Losada, a three-time Emmy® Award recipient will co-host the Olympic trials with Cantor. The celebrated presenter Sammy Sadovnik will narrate soccer, swimming and diving competitions. Oscar Guzmán, from Telemundo Chicago, will present tennis and soccer matches. “Titulares y Más” co-presenter, Edgar López, will be covering basketball, gymnastics, and track and field trials. René Giraldo, co-host of “Boxeo Telemundo” will bring all the excitement of Olympic boxing. Kaziro Aoyama will be embedded with the Mexican Olympic team following the steps of its athletes in and around London, and sports expert Jessica Rosa Andino will be in charge of indoor and beach volleyball.
Telemundo is also engaging an elite group of commentators and former Olympic athletes, who will be providing expert commentary and analysis of their respective disciplines including former Mexican soccer selection and Las Chivas de Guadalajara player, Manuel Sol; boxing legend and five-time World Champion, Erik Morales; Costa Rican Olympic swimming gold medalist, Claudia Poll; two-time race-walking Olympic medalist, Jefferson Pérez; and Olympic Games specialist, Mara Montero.
Likewise, Deportes Telemundo will feature a team of presenters and journalists to capture the stories of U.S. Hispanics in London during the Games. This talent includes co-host Monica Noguera; “Titulares y Más” co-host Karim Mendiburu; “Ritmo Deportivo” co-host Leti Coo; as well as reporters Verónica Contreras and Francisco Cuevas.
Features and storytelling will be a centerpiece of Telemundo’s Olympic programming, detailing the journey of Hispanic athletes on their quest for Olympic glory. Deportes Telemundo will be profiling more Olympic athletes from Latin America and the U.S. than ever before, aiming to relate their personal stories in moving ways. Some of the top Hispanic hopefuls to be profiled by Telemundo include Marlén Esparza, U.S. women’s nationals champion for the past six years, who will participate in the first-ever female Olympic boxing trials; Ana Sofía Gómez, a teenage Guatemalan gymnast and current Pan-American gold medalist; Paola Espinosa, the first female Mexican athlete to win a world diving championship in history; Danell Leyva, a Cuban-born 20-year- old-gymnast representing the U.S.; Steven López, a Nicaraguan-American and two-time Olympic gold medal winner in Tae Kwon Do, and many other athletes whose stories will be shared with millions of U.S. Hispanics.
Telemundo media cable network mun2 will feature, “mun2 Londres,” a daily program featuring a fresh take and behind the scenes look at the events in London, co-hosted by Guadalupe Venegas and Omar Amador.
For the first time in the network’s history, Telemundo will offer live streaming of broadcast coverage together with exclusive digital-only content of Olympic events, news, announcements and information for multichannel video programming distributors and authenticated subscribers totaling more than 200 hours of digital video, including all Telemundo on-air broadcasts and the live streaming of trials involving Hispanic athletes.
“The power of social media, mobile applications and digital interaction has become an expectation for our fans and users and we have made a concerted effort to ensure that their Olympic experience on these platforms will inform and entertain like never before,” said Eli Velásquez, Vice President of Sports for Telemundo Media and Co-Executive Producer of Telemundo’s coverage.
The network will dedicate two websites to the Games, with www.olimpiadastelemundo.com focused on video streaming for authenticated subscribers and trial results, and www.deportestelemundo.com offering news, analysis, color stories, profiles and lifestyle coverage. The Telemundo digital platform will be fully integrated to NBC’s via www.NBCOLYMPICS.COM.com/TELEMUNDO, giving users live access to virtually all Olympic trials.
