Mike McCarley was named President of Golf Channel in February 2011. He leads cable television’s only network dedicated to golf. It is seen in more than 80 countries and more than 120 million homes around the world, and televises more live golf than all other networks combined. McCarley is responsible for overseeing all of the network’s business interests, as well as all golf-related businesses for NBCUniversal, including golf coverage on NBC. He also oversees Golf Channel’s digital businesses, which is led by GolfChannel.com, a leading golf destination on the Internet, delivering unmatched coverage of the world of golf, as well as related services, such as GolfNow.com. He reports to Jon Litner, Group President of NBC Sports Group.
Under McCarley’s leadership, Golf Channel delivered its most-watched year ever in 2011. In the summer of 2011, McCarley played a key role in the NBC Sports Group’s television rights negotiations with the PGA TOUR, which resulted in NBC extending its TOUR partnership for another decade through 2021 and providing Golf Channel with opportunities to complement NBC’s coverage. In addition, Golf Channel has achieved numerous business milestones and delivered increased viewership across all programming and dayparts with McCarley at the helm.
Prior to his role at Golf Channel, McCarley served as Senior Vice President, Communications, Marketing and Promotions since August 2008. He is credited with developing NBC Sports’ highly successful “big event strategy,” which marshals all NBCUniversal assets to make the audiences for the biggest events in sports even bigger.
McCarley, who helped break two Guinness World Records as part of his role with NBC and has won multiple ProMax Awards for Olympic and NFL campaigns, joined NBC in February 2000 as the Communications Director for NBC’s Olympic division. In 2003, he was promoted to Director, Marketing and Communications, NBC Olympics, while he continued to lead NBC’s communications strategy. In 2004, he was promoted to Vice President and in 2006 added oversight of all NBC Sports Advertising and Promotions.
McCarley came to NBC from USA Triathlon, the national governing body for the sport in association with the U.S. Olympic Committee. He also spent one year as public relations assistant with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. A 1997 graduate of the University of Arizona, McCarley spent two years as a student assistant in the UA Sports Information department. He also served as a project manager at the AT&T Global Olympic Village at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., McCarley resides in Orlando, with his wife, Amy, son Tate and daughter Emmy.
