Latin music’s most prestigious awards show, the Billboard Latin Music Awards presented by State Farm, is an annual event honoring the top performers of the year in Latin music. Produced and broadcast LIVE in HD by Telemundo from The BankUnited Center at the University of Miami in Florida, this is a star-studded event that will take place on Thursday, April 26, 2012. Past performers and participants include: Carlos Santana, Marc Anthony, Shakira, Juanes, Miguel Bose, Alicia Keys, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, Don Omar, Paulina Rubio, Nelly Furtado, David Bisbal, Jessica Simpson, Arturo Sandoval, Luis Fonsi, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Fernandez, Elvis Crespo, Pilar Montenegro, Julio Iglesias, Los Tigres Del Norte, Mana, Wycleff Jean, Ricardo Montaner, Daddy Yankee, P. Diddy, Lupillo Rivera, Alejandro Sanz, Thalia, Marco Antonio Solis, Jaci Velasquez, Celia Cruz, Tito Nieves, Tito Puente, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Lucero, Wisin & Yandel, Calle 13 and RBD.
The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by the actual sales and radio airplay data that informs Billboard's weekly charts during a one-year period from the issue dated February 5, 2011 through this year's January 28, 2012 issue. Based on album and digital track sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and radio information monitored by Nielsen BDS, Billboard’s rankings are the world's most authoritative music charts. Finalists, and the eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard’s album and track sales charts, including Top Latin Albums and Latin Digital Songs, and radio charts, including Hot Latin Songs. Title-based categories are mostly confined to those songs or albums that did not appear on the respective charts prior to the Nov. 12, 2010 issue and excluding titles that were finalists in the prior-year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards. However, titles that have reached or maintained their peak position on their respective charts during the awards eligibility period (February 5, 2011 through this year’s January 28, 2012, issue) are eligible for inclusion regardless of chart debut date or prior finalist appearance.
Also presented on the show are Billboard’s prestigious discretionary awards including The Spirit of Hope Award for humanitarian contributions and the Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Previous winners of Billboard’s discretionary awards include: Soraya, Banda El Recodo, Willy Chirino, Gloria Estefan, Vicente Fernandez, Shakira, Mongo Santamaria, Jose Feliciano, Los Tigres Del Norte, Mana, Ricky Martin, Tito Puente, Olga Tañon, Ricardo Montaner, Miguel Bose, Conjunto Primavera, Juanes, Daddy Yankee, Carlos Santana, Los Temerarios, Marc Anthony, and Emmanuel.
The awards show caps off the 23rd annual Billboard Latin Music Conference presented by State Farm. The event, taking place on April 23 - 26 at the JW Marriot Marquis in Miami, Florida, unites today’s top Latin music artists and key Latin music industry influencers for informative panel discussions, live music showcases, networking opportunities, The Billboard Latin Music Marketing Awards, and The Billboard Bash – a pre-Billboard Latin Music Awards party featuring performances by some of this year’s finalists.
