Chris Peña is the Executive Editor of NBCLatino.com. A 16-year veteran of television news, Chris is tasked with building a site for NBC News aimed at Hispanics in English.
As Executive Editor, Peña leads all aspects of the business, including coordination of the technical development, staffing & hiring, editorial vision and sales & marketing. The site aims to super-serve an under-addressed market: the more than 25 million U.S. Hispanic online news consumers who prefer content in English.
Prior to this, Peña was Assistant News Director at the NBC-owned station in Chicago -- the third largest television market. In this role, he supervised nearly 100 employees and had oversight of the station’s daily newsgathering efforts, as well as the long-form special projects group. His team produced 29 hours of weekly news programming, and more than 20 hours of original local programming on its digital channel. Peña also led the station’s transition to a content center model. The process involved a reorganization of newsroom roles, the introduction of new technology and an increased emphasis on multi-platform distribution.
Prior to Chicago, Peña was Executive Producer of the 6 p.m., 10 p.m. & 11 p.m. news at NBC-Owned WTVJ-TV in Miami – the 16th largest television market. He led the station to several demographic ratings wins, and helped launch a 7 o’clock newscast to give south Florida viewers their only local news choice in the time period. Chris leveraged his bilingual background to strengthen ties with the co-located Telemundo newsroom. The tighter relationship strengthened NBC’s coverage in a Spanish-dominant media market.
Prior to Miami, Peña was News Director of Telemundo station KTMD-TV in Houston -- the fourth largest Hispanic market. Chris led the transition into a new facility, new technologies and superb continuous coverage of two catastrophic weather events on the gulf coast: Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. As Hurricane Rita approached, Telemundo Houston remained on the air for more than 40 hours over a 3-day period, keeping Houston’s Spanish-language community informed about the impending danger.
In Houston, Peña also worked at three other television stations, including a six-year role in the sports department at the Fox-owned station in the market.
Peña is a 1996 graduate of the University of Houston.
