NBC Bay Area

NBC Bay Area, NBC's newest owned-and-operated station, serves San Jose-Oakland-San Francisco, the nation's 5th-largest market.

Founded in San Jose by the Sunlit Bakery, NBC Bay Area signed on the air September 12, 1955. The station was an independent for five years before becoming an ABC affiliate in 1960. Landmark Communications bought NBC Bay Area in 1978 and sold the station to Granite Broadcasting Corp. in 1990. NBC Bay Area became an NBC affiliate on January 1, 2002, and increased its broadcast power to reach more of the market. NBC acquired the station from Granite on May 1, 2002.

NBC Bay Area is the only station in recent history to switch markets, moving from the Monterey/Salinas market (market # 120) to the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose market (#5) on January 1, 2002.

Today, NBC Bay Area serves the entire market with more local news hours and more local programs than the other area stations, and has already achieved ratings leadership in primetime and late news. NBC Bay Area opened a new news and sales office in San Francisco. A new digital broadcast facility in San Jose opened in 2004.
